2023 Postgraduate Research Grant for the Study of the Tainan Region
The Postgraduate Research Grant for the Study of the Tainan Region is designed to help M.A. and Ph.D. students pursuing their research in the humanities and social sciences on the TAINAN Region. It aims to arouse interest in this region and to deepen knowledge of its past and present, to create opportunities for young generations to develop new research directions, or opening up to comparison with other localities and countries of Asia.
The grant is promoted by the International Center for Tainan Area Humanities and Social Sciences Research (ICTAHSSR), composed of Taiwan and foreign scholars with expertise in Taiwan and Tainan Studies, who take charge of the entire selection process. The grant is funded by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Tainan City Hall.

GUIDELINES
The Postgraduate Research Grant for the Study of the Tainan Region is designed to
help M.A. and Ph.D. students pursuing their research in the humanities and social
sciences on the TAINAN Region. It aims to arouse interest in this region and to
deepen knowledge of its past and present, to create opportunities for young
generations to develop new research directions, or opening up to comparison with
other localities and countries of Asia.
The grant is promoted by the International Center for Tainan Area Humanities and
Social Sciences Research (ICTAHSSR), composed of Taiwan and foreign scholars with
expertise in Taiwan and Tainan Studies, who take charge of the entire selection
process. The grant is generously funded by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Tainan City
Hall.
REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICATION
being enrolled as a M.A. student or Ph.D. candidate in a university or a college, in Taiwan or abroad;
with a M.A. thesis or Ph.D. dissertation subject focusing on the Tainan area, fully or in comparison with other regions of Taiwan or any corner of Asia, in the field of humanities or social sciences;
In such case, the thesis has to be completed within two years after receiving the grant, in order to comply with accounting regulations.
NUMBER OF RECIPIENTS, AMOUNT OF GRANTS
Two Ph.D. grants per year; each amounting NTD 100,000.
Five M.A. grants per year; each amounting NTD 50,000.
The grant will be given in two installments, 40% in October 2023 and 60% after the completion of the thesis /dissertation, and upon the ICTAHSSR board/Cultural Bureau receiving a copy, no later than July 2025.
In order to encourage fieldwork research in Tainan, the recipients are eligible to apply and stay for short periods at the International Center for Tainan Area Humanities and Social Sciences Research. In that case, a fieldwork proposal will have to be submitted to the Committee of the Research Center. Except a room in the Japanese house run by the Center, they can be provided office space with equipment, and can have access to the documentation of the Center focusing on first hand resources. Contacts with members of the local society, local students or academics will be facilitated by the research assistant of the Center and its committee members.
Grant recipients are also encouraged, after completing their fieldwork, to select and provide the International Center for Tainan Area Humanities and Social Sciences Research with a copy of the first hand documents they think could help other students or scholars in their research and constitute valuable archives for the study of the Tainan area.
APPLICATION DEADLINE AND PERIOD OF SELECTION
Applications must be received before May 31, 2023. The envelope containing the application must be postmarked by the 31th of May, at the latest (see address below).
The selection process is handled and supervised by the scientific committee of the ICTAHSSR and will last until mid-September 2023 (see appendix 1).
APPLICATION CONTENT
Applicants must include in their file the following items (3 paper copies plus 1 electronic version sent by email):
Application form (see appendix 2);
Research proposal including:
the title of the proposed research and its problematic, mentioning the importance of the research in its domain, the motivations and purposes of the research, a literature review of the subject, explanation about the methodology;
estimate of the limits and possible achievements of the research;
research progress schedule;
bibliography
Attestation of registration for the year (e.g. student I.D.);
Two recommendation letters (one letter must be from the applicant’s supervisor).
SELECTION PROCESS
1) The applications received by the ICTAHSSR will first be examined by a pre-
selection board to assess the prerequisites of the applicants and their topics. The
research proposals are then externally evaluated. Finally, on the basis of the
reviewers’ reports and further discussions, the Selection Committee will determine
the list of the grant recipients.
2) The Cultural Affairs Bureau of Tainan City Hall will notify every grant recipient via
letter.
3) Three months after the end of their thesis/ dissertation and their defense, the
grant recipients are required to submit 2 copies of their thesis/dissertation, plus 1
electronic version to the International Center for Tainan Area Humanities and Social
Sciences Research (see details below).
IMPORTANT INFORMATION

If grant recipients are unable to complete their dissertation/thesis, they must inform the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Tainan City Government which has the right to withdraw the grant and to claim back the money already granted.
The recipients must follow ethical and academic rules of conduct vis-à-vis the research and the writing of their dissertation/thesis.
